New Millennium Academy

Evolving a school’s identity to honor its roots while supporting its growth

An Evolving Identity

New Millennium Academy (NMA) is a KG–8 charter school serving the growing Hmong community in the Twin Cities, with a strong foundation built since 2005.

As the school continued to expand, their existing brand no longer reflected the energy, diversity, or cultural depth of their community. At the same time, it was important to preserve key elements of their original identity and the meaning it held.

We approached this as a thoughtful evolution rather than a full departure, retaining what was meaningful while modernizing the system as a whole. The updated identity introduces a more cohesive visual language through refined typography, an expanded color palette, and custom Hmong-inspired iconography and patterns that honor cultural heritage while feeling fresh and relevant.

The result is a unified brand that feels both rooted and forward-looking, better reflecting NMA’s community and creating a stronger sense of connection across students, families, and faculty.

“Light Codes Consulting and Design strategically and holistically encompassed our organization's vision, mission, and story when designing our new brand identity. They patiently took extra time to ensure that all design elements were culturally responsive to the marginalized constituents that we serve.”
